Bananas foster recipe
Bananas foster recipe was created in New Orleans in the 1950s and it was a hit for everyone that tried this fabulous dessert. The dessert was a creation in the kitchen of Brennan’s restaurant and has been duplicated and changed in the last six decades depending on the chef or cook making the recipe. It does have alcohol in it so it is not intended for underage diners. First you will need the following ingredients.
4 medium bananas
¼ cup butter
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup banana liquor
½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon
¼ cup dark rum
2 cups vanilla ice cream
You can substitute some sugar free or fat free alternatives if you would like a little healthier dessert. It does not affect the taste using those substitutes and will still turn out to be a fine dish. You can even substitute the rum for a spiced rum if you prefer. You should make sure the bananas are firm and ripe as that will change the texture and flavor.
You will then have to prepare the dish as follows:
Start by peeling the bananas and cutting them in half, then each half into two sections. Melt the butter in a large skillet, you can use a nonstick or cast iron depending on your preference, stir in brown sugar, liquor and cinnamon. You will then bring this to a simmer and cook it for a full 2 minutes. Add your bananas and then cook for another four minutes or until the bananas are tender. Remove from the burners and add rum to the pan. Ignite the rum with a long match. Stir the bananas gently until the flam dies down. Serve them with the vanilla ice cream.
The above recipe is the standard recipe from the 1950s and is shared among anyone that is looking for a banana fosters recipe. It has been duplicated on the food network, in 5 star kitchens in New York and London and even in kitchens across small town America. It is a very popular dish that you might have had, but did not know the name of or maybe that the recipe was available to duplicate at home.
There are other variants on this recipe depending on the chef or cook preparing it. Some have added spiced dark rum. While others have added nuts like walnuts or pecans to the dish to give it a different texture and added flavor. Some have gone so far as to remove the banana liquor and cinnamon and just use the four basic ingredients served over ice cream. The point is that with a recipe as simple and brilliant as this one you can modify it to fit your individual tastes and desires.
With the holidays fast approaching making this as your dessert will add a distinct closing on the nights meal and have your friends talking throughout the rest of the new year about your ingenuity and culinary skills.
